Alaska Breed from Germany


The Alaska Rabbit's origin was from Germany. They are a medium-sized rabbit breed that weighs around 7 to 9 pounds. Their body are stocky which makes them seem to have no neck at all. They have broad heads with brown-black eyes and a plain black fur color.

It was back in 1990 when the program had started for breeding the Alaska Rabbit. The person behind the program was Rabbit breeder and judge Mox Gotha. Their goal was to produce resemblance to that of the Alaskan Fox for the purpose of breeding similar type of fur.

At some point, the breeders didn't achieve what they intend to create but they are satisfied enough with their different result. They did produce the Alaska rabbit which have a completely plain black color with a long glossy guard hairs without any mixture of silvering.

The BRC (British Rabbit Council) had classified the Alaska breed for fur production. This was due to their jet black dense, silky and lustrous fur. The fur are also glossy and intensely pigmented.

After the discovery of the Alaskan rabbit breed, they were first introduced in Europe on 1907. Decades later, the breed made their way into America then to Canada. It was in the mid-1970's when ARBA (American Rabbit Breeders Association) had acknowledge the Alaskan breed. 

However, it was short-lived as ARBA had recognized the Black Havana in 1980 as replacements for the Alaska.

On 1981, ARBA had finally dropped the Alaska from their list wherein its uncertain if any of the breeds are still being breed somewhere in the US.

1. The fur are its greatest value wherein you can tan and utilize the fur either for personal or business interest.

2. Pet lovers will surely enjoy their comfy black dense silky fur. According to some sources, they are rather gentle with bubbly personality.

3. Their weight can reach up to 7 to 9 pounds which makes them as a good source of meat.

Caring for your Alaska Rabbits

If you are planning to own an Alaska rabbit as pet then it is important for you to consider first if you have a secured area particularly a garden that your pet can run around. These creatures love and enjoy nibbling on the fresh grass as they expose themselves on the warmth sunlight.

Keeping your Alaska rabbit inside your house needs careful introduction to the other pets around such as your dog and cat. At first, they feel scared enough so you have to provide a secure place for your pet to hide itself when feeling unsecured. You should also check any possible objects that your rabbit might chew on such as cables, shoes, clothes, papers and etc...

Are you going to keep your pet in a hutch?

It is important that you need to have a pair of Alaskan rabbits if you intend to keep them inside a hutch as they do not like to be alone. Make sure that their hutch are well built wherein its sturdy enough to handle damage such as from other animals that attempts to hurt your pet. Apart from being sturdy, it should also be weather proof.

Diet is also another important factor for the health-care of your Alaska rabbit pet. Ensure that they stay fit and healthy by providing them green leaves or vegetables and high quality of rabbit pellets.

In the United States, ARBA no longer recognize this type of breed which means that they can go extinct. With your help, you can change the future of the Alaskan rabbit breeds by raising them. This will maintain their number that ARBA might consider them on their list once again.
