History of Rabbits - Leporidae Family

Anyone can easily recognize a rabbit but in terms of their scientific classification, it will be a challenging task for pet owners. To give you a slight short and brief history about rabbits, I had summarized all the information on this post that I gathered from various sources around the internet.

Rabbits can be found all over the world wherein they are being breed for their meats, furs or as pets. There are actually certain type of breeds that are appropriate for such purpose. Those rabbits that can grow large sizes are being breed for their tasty meat.

While rabbits with long furs are being breed to harvest their furs to be processed into threads. But the most interesting part is making rabbits as one of your pet.

In the previous post, we have covered all of the existing rabbit species of the world and the number goes over more than a hundred. According to the expert, the best type of species as rabbit pets are the 'Leporids'. This type of specie consists of over 60 species of rabbits and hare wherein scientist categorized them as the 'Leporidae Family'.

Lovely Bunny

Leporids commonly have a size ranging from small to medium and they can easily adopt from a rapid changing environment. They possess a physical characteristic of having a long hind legs with four toes on each foot.

On its shorter fore legs are fives toes on each. Taking a closer look into their feet, you will find them hairy which improves their grip especially when they are running at a very fast speed. Apart from being hairy, they also have powerful claws in all of their toes.

Leporid's ears are very distinctive which can be described as elongated and highly sensitive that they have an exceptional sense of hearing. Their eyes are large but it has no connection why they have an excellent night vision.

Hares and Rabbits of the Leporidae Family are both 'hervivorous' which means that they primarily feed themselves with grasses and herbs. Other than grasses and herbs, they actually also eat almost any kind of green leaves, fruits and seeds.

As a 'Coprophagus' creatures, the food that they consumed will go through their digestive system twice. The first process of their digestive system is to expel the food that they had eaten into soft green feces. Then second, it will be re-ingested producing the commonly hard and dark fecal pellets.

Just like 'rodents', rabbits also posses powerful front incisor teeth with smaller pairs on the side and at the upper jaw. This provides them the capability to chew on tough materials such as woods.

There's really tons of information about the rabbit's history so I'll just be providing you the references below for you to have a further reading about them:
