How to Keep Cats Away from your Rabbits?

Cats are naturally born as hunters wherein they can survive in the wild on their own. As Rabbit Pet owners, it is important for you to keep cats away from them as they might hurt your beloved bunny. There are various methods on how to keep cats away from your rabbits and let's take them one at a time:

Design of your Rabbit Hutch

Keeping your Rabbits inside their comfortable hatch/hatches will ensure their safety against cats. At some point, there are hatches designed with huge opening that allows the size of a cat to be able to break inside. The remedy is to find a material that you can use to cover that opening.

Rabbits are Excellent Indoor Pets

Many bunny owners don't realize that rabbits are excellent indoor type of pets. However, it might complicate things when you already have a cat or dog or even both. One good solution for this situation is to segregate your rabbit within a small bedroom. You just have to ensure that the door is closed at all times. The other solution is the next method below.

Training your Cat or Other Pets

Some claims that they are able to train their Cats or Dogs not to hurt their rabbits. According to them, you can teach your cat or dog by getting them together. At first it will be natural that your cat or your dog will threaten your rabbit but by doing it all the time, they will soon finally get used to one another.

Hurting your neighbor's cat is a very unlikely method of driving the animal away. Most methods found on other websites are very disappointing that they result into a cruel way of getting rid their neighbor's cat. Anyway, a good method is to feed the cat with plenty of foods. The cat won't be there in the first place if it isn't hungry.

If you have nothing to feed on your neighbor's cat then you might consider this second option. Owning your own cat might also work as cats are territorial in nature. The area of your property will also be their own territory.

Thus if somebody's cat had stepped into your territory, your cat will come chasing them out. Though, this will only work if your cat is bigger than the intruder. Otherwise, you may just consider a dog.

Keeping cats away from your rabbits requires a combination of preventive measures and environmental modifications.

Here are some steps you can take to help protect your rabbits from cats:

1. Secure the rabbit enclosure

Ensure that the rabbit's living area is securely fenced or enclosed to prevent cats from gaining access. Use sturdy materials like wire mesh with small openings to create a barrier that cats cannot squeeze through.

2. Elevated housing

Provide the rabbits with an elevated hutch or housing that is off the ground. Cats are less likely to be able to reach the rabbits if they are housed at a higher level. Make sure the housing is secure and cannot be easily tipped over.

3. Add a roof or cover

Install a roof or cover over the rabbit enclosure to prevent cats from jumping in. This can be a solid roof or a mesh cover that allows light and airflow while keeping cats out. Make sure the cover is securely fastened to prevent cats from entering through any gaps.

4. Use cat deterrents

Employ cat deterrents around the rabbit enclosure to discourage cats from approaching. Some options include:

   - Motion-activated sprinklers

These devices release a burst of water when they detect motion, scaring away cats.

   - Ultrasonic devices

Emit high-frequency sounds that are unpleasant to cats but generally inaudible to humans.

   - Cat repellent sprays

Use natural or commercial cat repellents around the perimeter of the rabbit enclosure. These sprays emit scents that cats find unappealing.

5. Secure outdoor playtime

If you allow your rabbits to have supervised outdoor playtime, make sure it's in a secure and enclosed area where cats cannot enter. Keep a watchful eye on your rabbits during their outdoor sessions.

6. Remove attractants

Avoid leaving food or water bowls for the rabbits outside, as they can attract not only rabbits but also other animals like cats. Remove any potential food sources that may lure cats into the vicinity of your rabbits.

7. Monitor the surroundings

Be vigilant and keep an eye out for any cats in the area. If you spot a cat near the rabbit enclosure, make noise or chase it away to discourage its presence.

Remember, even with these precautions, it's essential to regularly supervise your rabbits and their environment to ensure their safety.

Grow a Lemon Balm Tree

Cats don't naturally like the strong scent of lemon. You can use such scent of smell against them to protect your rabbits by planting a Lemon Balm near the hutch. If available at your grocery store, you can buy the Citrus Spray used on flavoring soft drinks and cocktails or for seasoning. Simply spray it around the hatch which will drive any cats away from getting close.

Cat Hunter

Securing your pet on a well designed rabbit hutch can be the best solution against cats. However, rabbits needs to go outside the environment at least to stretch themselves up and to have a couple of exercise. At this period of time, the most secure method on how to keep cats away from your rabbits is under your own supervision.
