Harmful Treats that Needs to be Avoided

If you are a new or first-time rabbit owner then it is for sure that you are having a hard time trying to figure out what type of foods that needs to be avoided by your pet. So the first important thing that you need to know is that rabbits are 'lagomorph' creatures which means that they are herbivorous animals. They only feed themselves with plants, hays, grasses, flowers, fruits and all sorts of things that grows on the ground.

A rabbit's digestive tract can be similar to the horse that when they are feed with starchy and fatty foods, their intestinal organs could suffer from a very serious pain. Yes its that too sensitive that in order to ease the pain, a visit to a vet is required.

Rabbit commercial 'gourmet' or 'treat' especially those with mixed dried fruits, nuts and seeds must be completely avoided. If you own a bird or a hamster then they are sure safe for them to eat it but they are not proper food for a bunny.

Rabbit gourmet treats are not actually intended to help your pet with its nutrients needs but to make money out from your pocket. If the manufacturers truly cares about your pet then they won't be selling gourmet rabbit treats in the first place.

Fiber is an important nutrient needed by our body but this does not apply the same with the rabbits. Thus do not attempt to feed your bunny with cookies, crackers, nuts, seeds, cereals, oatmeal or anything else with high fiber content. Rabbits are herbivorous animals where they have better digestive system when it comes to digesting cellulose (dietary fiber).

Fiber Hay

If you insists of feeding your rabbit with high fiber contents from what has been mentioned above, this could result into various forms of health problems such as intestinal disease and 'cecal dysbiosis'. But most commonly, your pet will suffer from obesity which is the cause of short range of life-span.

To explain why, your rabbit needs to have regular exercise. But if your pet is an obese then your rabbit will have a hard time moving around which makes it easily exhausted. As a result, your rabbit would prefer to spend most of its time sleeping for the whole day and night.

Some types of seeds especially the 'Canadian peas' and corn kernels are a big No No into your rabbit's diet. When consumed by your pet, there are high risks that these seeds can cause blockage into your pet's intestines. The result can be life-threatening so its best to avoid any form of seeds at all costs.

Finally, do not feed your pet with antibiotics that has not been prescribe by your veterinarian. Here the three form of antibiotics that can be deadly when ingested by your rabbit pet: Amoxicillin, Lincomycin and Clindamycin.
